Dear all, there's a little thing I met which puzzled me a long time. Post it here, Maybe you can help me. Thanks a lot in advance! Question: When we send wishes to friends, we often say," Merry Chiristmas! ". Is the expression "Happy Christmas!" OK? Can we say like this? I have checked it on the internet, and haven't had clear answer. In fact it came across to me when I saw some Christmas special wishes on http://www.jxue.com/zt/06zt/ChristmasWish/, Is this kind of words OK? Wish you give me your idea. Thanks again. 作者:yoyoling 时间:2006-12-23 15:22:00

I have heard the questions before when I studied in High School. My English teacher told us that merry and happy have slight diference here. Merry means a short period of happiness while happy means a relatively long term. Thus it is the reason why we say merry Christmas while happy new year , since Christmas is only one day but a new year lasts for about 365 days. Here's the same question raised in Yahoo! Answers which you can refer to: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061207080727AAC2kyr 作者:mycoolife 时间:2006-12-27 0:02:00

ikarus' answer makes sense. No grammatical mistake with "Happy Christmas", however, it is strange. Just use "Merry Christmas" |
