HEALTH MANAGEMENT PLANS

There has to be a blueprint in everyday language, that tells us how to organize our activities to guard our health-- hasn’t there? The maxim that anything worth saying must be able to be said simply is as intellectually dishonest as it is compellingly acceptable. In spite of this I shall attempt to summarise a skeletal agenda of priorities that may apply to almost anyone. To explain why this is an “attempt” I shall highlight four observations. It is only be filtering these observations through our own perspectives that we can arrive at a relevant starting point.

1. General issues are at once the easiest to outline and the least useful for individual need.

2. We are so often at the mercy of specialised language that the plea for everyday clarity is perfectly understandable. Regrettably, this conversational clarity almost invariably obscures pertinent detail to the point of creating risk.

3. From the lay point of view, we seem to have sufficient in common with other people to conclude that our needs are the same. This may be a crucial error.

4. If the medium is the message, point form summaries may be reducing the summaries to absurdity.

Newspapers regularly report studies pointing out the health risks connected to low participation in activity. Such information is offset by a tradition of columnists either burlesquing the antics of fitness fanatics or ogling the lithe bodies of the best end of the genetic spectrum. So, it will come as no surprise when I claim there is an ambiguity in the popular message regarding health activity. It is unhelpful in encouraging participation.

一、 一般性问题既是最容易概括的，又是对个体需求最无用处的。
二、 我们经常地受专业术语的支配，以至于对日常简明用语的吁求变得完全可以理解。令人遗憾的是，这种对话式的简明几乎总是使有关细节变得模糊至产生危险的地步。
三、从外行的角度来看，我们似乎与他人有足够的相同之处，可以得出这样的结论：我们的需求是相同的。这可能是一个重大的谬误。
四、如果媒介即讯息，那么要点概述可能会把概要降到荒诞的地步。
众多报纸定期报道一些研究成果，指出了与较少参与运动有关的健康风险。此类信息为某些专栏作家的一个传统所抵消：他们要么取消健美狂热分子的古怪行为，要么贪婪的盯视基因谱中最佳一端所决定的柔软身体。因此，当我声称有关健康运动的大众信息中存在模棱两可时，这一点也不会让人觉得奇怪。这种信息对于鼓励人们参与运动毫无益处。
