Simon Crean’s Opportunity To Re-Focus Labor
Simon Crean has been given an opportunity to reinvent himself, convince the electorate that he stands for something, and---most important ---realign Labor so that it becomes once again the party of progress, rather than reaction.

Whether Mr Crean can rise to this challenge, which is more formidable than the one that he just fought off from Kim Beazley, will be decided in coming weeks as he delivers on the raft of new policies that he projected yesterday.

It is most important that Mr Crean now be given a chance to take federal Labor in a new direction without further destabilisation from Mr Beazley or his supporters.

The fact that Mr Beazlely’s concession speech yesterday sounded more like a campaign launch was not a good sign. He clearly carries the torch. But Mr Beazley’s timing and strategy were all wrong: he underestimated the doubts in caucus about his own previous performance as leader, and he underestimated his opponent.

If Mr Crean is now given a fair run, there is a chance that he could emerge from his recent trials a stronger, more respected and more credible leader. That would be very good news for Labor, and for the health of the political system, which depends on vigorous inter-party competition.

Mr Crean is still a longshot, but anybody who doubts the value that the electorate places on tenacity and resilience should take a long and hard look at the current occupant of the Lodge.
